Mark and Monique Russell
Mark and Monique are the Senior Ministers at Greenbank Community Church.
Married for 31 years and Christians for 25 of those years they are passionate about making a real difference in their local community through the body of the local church.
Mark is a retired Naval Officer with 23 years of service as Nuclear Engineer on submarines. He met Monique in 1984 and married in 1986. A year later they were blessed by God with their daughter Ashlea and two years later God blessed them again with their son, Jordan. The early years of their marriage were challenging times and their marriage was undoubtedly saved when they both came to the Lord at the same time through the ministry of “Walk of a Thousand Men” in 1992.
Both Mark and Monique became active in the local Methodist Church where they were saved, in the little hamlet of Darite. During that time Mark began training as a local Methodist preacher but laid this aside in 2000 when they both felt a clear calling to leave the church in which they were saved in to join the Assemblies of God (AOG) congregation at Greenbank, the church they now lead. During his last 10 years in the Royal Navy Mark assumed the responsibility of Church Officer as submarines don’t carry Naval Chaplains. This was unquestionably part of God’s amazing plan in preparing the ground for his ministry in leading the church today. Mark loves to teach from the Word of God and passionately believes in its infallibility. He has preached in many places but his favourite is undoubtedly when his submarine HMS Tireless surfaced through the ice at the North Pole on his 40th birthday. The Gospel will be preached in Jerusalem and Samaria and to the ends of the earth…..
Mark is a keen sportsman and is an active member of his local fitness gym and he still enjoys playing football. He has competed in a triathlon, cycled from John o Groats to Lands end for charity, completed the 3 Peaks Challenge of climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowden with 7 other members of his congregation. However, having said all that it now takes him 30 minutes to get from his bed to the bathroom in the morning!
In 2006 through a prophetic word Mark heard the Lord ask him to leave his career in the Royal Navy in order to take up full time ministry. A week later not knowing where, how or what God was calling him to, in faith and obedience resigned. It took another year for his notice to be worked out and 3 months after he left the Navy he was offered the position of Senior Pastor at Greenbank Community Church.
In 2006 Monique set up a domiciliary care agency under the umbrella of the church charity. Today it employs 20 people providing “care with compassion” to those in need in the community. This ministry is registered with CQC and is the “hands and feet of Jesus” providing support and care to vulnerable adults ranging from palliative and personnel care to house and garden makeovers. See www.greenbankcare.org. for further information.
Monique loves her family and is a wonderful mother and grandmother to Harry-Joe and Sadie-Mai. She is an extremely compassionate lady who has a genuine heart to bring healing to hurting people. She hates the limelight and is very happy being in the background working with and encouraging others on a one to one basis. She is undoubtedly a real strength and support to Mark who highly values her love, wisdom and patience. She loves cooking and reading (when she has time) and would love to travel more. She enjoys the café culture and is never happier than drinking a glass of sparkling water (and eating a cake!) and dreaming whilst watching football – just joking, watching the world go by!
