"decrease to INCREASE"
In the gospel of John chapter 3(verse 26), John the Baptist was asked by his own students about the rising popularity of the ministry of Jesus. John responded with the words " He must become greater; i must become less" - other translations say "i must decrease so He can increase."
John the Baptist was the voice in the wilderness - the one who proclaimed, "make way for the Lord"! - fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah (Chapter 40). John the Baptist recognised what he was called to do by God and did it well. Though he was very popular with his disciples he pointed to the one - Jesus - as the messiah. And, he summed it up perfectly with those famous words "I must decrease so He can Increase". Beautiful!
The church exists to point people to Jesus - it is not you or me, our ministries and leaders - we must always look to Him, seek Him and guide people to Him.
As people it is so easy to elevate pastors, evangelists, teachers, prophets onto pedestals and they can become our focus. Of course, it is very easy too for those in these positions to allow themselves to become the sole attention. Jesus said in John 7 verse 18 -"Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him"
Jesus purchased our salvation on that cross and by His blood our names are written in the book of Life. Lest we forget that and put ourselves on a pedestal. "Lord Jesus - it is ALL about you!!!"
